OK - you made it through the first round of the process and have survived all the pre-screenings - those of the human kind and those based on pure technology. Great Job! Now the real selling and matchmaking begins...
Although you would love to go one-on-one with the hiring manager, by now you know that it is never that simple. Next up after the initial screenings is the interview round, designed to take you through various gates with various stakeholders before you get to the offer stage. You will likely get the chance to interact directly with the hiring manager, but you are also likely to see a bunch of other players who will have input in the hiring decision. Every company has a slightly different twist to their own process, but in general terms, here's the types of interviews you can expect in the interview round:
- Phone Screen/Interview
- One-on-One Interview
- The Rotating Interview
- The Lunch Interview
- The Group/Panel/Committee Interview
- The Presentation Interview
- The Final Interview
Expect combinations of these types of interviews in any hiring process, and also expect to be called back multiple times (Hint - if they call back you are in good shape). Survive and advance is the mantra. Also expect that at the end of the process you'll feel like you need Ari Gold pitching you to the powers that be (pictured at right). Finally, the list above covers who you are talking to and what they mean to the process, not the actual type of interview format used (we will cover that elsewhere).
More to follow on each of the these interview types in future entries....
