In addition to Recruiting Systems screening your resume and ranking it accordingly, Recruiters and Hiring Managers evaluating your resume and using Google/MySpace/Facebook to take a look at your life before they call, there's one other item you are most likely to face before you get to spend quality time with a person at your targeted company - The Screening Assessment.
Screening assessments can be delivered in a variety of ways (online, paper and pencil, proctored or honor system, etc.). Regardless of the way they are delivered, there are generally two types:
* Screening Assessments for Knowledge, Skill and Abilities (KSAs)
* Screening Assessments for Motivation Fit
The assessments for KSAs are pretty straightforward. They are designed to test you on the KSAs you need to know or are expected to provide as a part of the targeted job. Examples include a knowledge test or assessment to determine if your proficiency level in a certain programming language meets the need for a development position (see vendors like Brainbench). Additionally, some companies will do actually skill assessments to ensure you can display the raw skills they need in a certain job. The lowest level example of this would be a keyboard test employed to make sure clerical types can crank out the volume, but these skill tests are common in bigger companies with technical positions as well.
Screening Assessments for Motivational Fit are different. These tests are more psychological in nature and designed to ensure the behavioral traits embedded in your DNA equate to success in a given role. Common users of these types of tests are companies looking to fill Sales or Customer Service roles. Expect a battery of statements you are instructed to read and then state how strongly you agree with each statement on a Likert Scale type of system. You'll move through the assessment, then your combined profile is compared to the desired profile, and your are ranked accordingly.
Once the results are provided to the recruiter, you will generally be moved forward in the process based on the results - a pass/fail type of scenario. Whether you get significant feedback on how you did depends on the company.
Two rules when talking to recruiter about the screeners - don't question the validity of the assessment (it more than likely has been validated and you'll be labeled as a legal eagle if you ask too many questions) and appear accommodating to taking the time to perform the screen.
One primary rule when taking or performing the assessment - be yourself. Trying to cheat the assessment can kick you out (most screening assessments control for this) and more importantly, you want to land in a job that is a great fit for what motivates you to come to work each day. Trying to cheat the assessment runs counter to that goal.

School: Sandy Valley Local SchoolsYour name (s): Tim Dudek (PLTW 6th and 7th), Lou Anne Gross (6th Grade Math), Tojh Nicholson (7th Grade Math), Richard Kay 5th Grade Math)Date: Rest of 2011-2012 school year and 2012 -2013Email (s): Phone (s): 330.866.9371Briefly decsribe:1. What and how you would like to participate in the Mindletics Pilot?Students will utilize the Khan Academy to enrich their knowledge and understanding of math skills. Teacher will use Khan 2 -3 times per week in class. All students will be tracked using Khan. On off days RTI (response to intervention) and IEP (individual education plan) students will utilize Khan. We fully intend to incorporate the Khan academy into the daily intervention period provided in the schedule. We will implement an after school program for selected students. Teachers will help students set individual Kahn Academy performance goals and provide both team and personal rewards as goals are met. 2. What outcomes do you hope to see?Sandy Valley will track student achievement through a variety of tools. First the Kahn Academy itself offers instant feedback for students and performance results for teachers. The district already employs Testingwerks, Study Island, AimsWeb, OAA, AYP to track student achievement in Mathematics. In addition, teachers are developing common assessments at each grade level to evaluate student mastery.A. Number of students involved? 380 About 120 per class 5th, 6th and 7th grade.B. Other:3. What amount of funding is required and how will it be used?A. Start up costs are daunting and without a grant the district could not hope to implement such an ambitious program. We would like to start with a classroom set of ipad’s for each classroom 5th, 6th, 7th and PLTW set (4 sets of 30 and one ipad for teacher 124) and 124 covers. We would need to purchase 12 charging/syncing bays, each bay holds 10 ipads and a server solely to maintain ipads. We would also try and find an insurance policy or an extra set of 10 ipads, to replace damaged or broken devices. We would need funds to purchase apps as needed. Lastly is funding to compensate teacher for after school assistance for students. See budget below.BudgetItemCostQuantityTotalApple iPad 2$500.00130$65,000.00iPad 2 covers$30.00134$4,020.00iPad 2 VGA dongles$30.004$120.00Apple's Mobile Device Management Server $4,000.001$4,000.00After School Teacher Stipend$25.00180$4,500.00After School BusingDistrict will provide0$0.00AppsFree0$0.00iPad charging station cartsDistrict will provide3$0.00PrintingDistrict will provide0$0.00Teacher iPads$500.004$2,000.00Kahn Academy$0.000$0.00Total$79,640.00B. Enough for a really nice program.C. World class effort : Provide a one-to-one program with every student assigned their own iPad. With ubiquitous access to the Kahn Academy, production tools and communication with teachers, the district would break the education paradigm by “flipping the classroom”. Students would learn tomorrow’s lesson at home through the Kahn Academy while teachers would provide applied mathematics outcomes in class.BudgetItemCostQuantityTotalApple iPad 2$500.00500$250,000.00iPad 2 covers$30.00525$15,750.00iPad 2 VGA dongles$30.0025$750.00Apple's Mobile Device Management Server $4,000.001$4,000.00After School Teacher Stipend$25.00180$4,500.00After School BusingDistrict will provide0$0.00AppsFree0$0.00iPad charging station cartsDistrict will provide0$0.00PrintingDistrict will provide0$0.00Teacher iPads$500.0025$12,500.00Kahn Academy$0.000$0.00Total$287,500.00
